I gave a presentation “Social Networks in Education” at the E-Learn 2008 Conference in Las Vegas last week. I want to take the opportunity here to share the presentation in my blog. My presentation provides a brief overview of social networking in education. Also, it presents a case study that integrates social networking into a graduate course for the purpose of building a sense of community, improving communications and interactions, and promoting student-centered collaboration. Below is my presentation at the E-Learn 2008 Conference.

Social networking tools appear throughout the value chain of businesses this time. It is now an integral part of the new century of businesses.

Internet communication is useful tooling. For social, we can use as Facebook. For knowledge, we can use Yahoo or Wikipedia. For biz, we can use Alibaba.
Who can say E-learning will not happen in near future? Maybe we don’t need to go to school anymore?
Social Networks
The statistics regarding the use of social networking sites are interesting. The fact that teenagers spend as much time or more on a Social Network than watching TV indicates a change in trends and interests among the nation’s teens. Since humans are social by nature, these statistics suggest that the interaction with synchronous chat is preferred to watching a program or television where interaction is not possible. There may even be an addiction to social networking among the users. Adults and teenagers admit to spending too much time browsing the Internet and using social networking sites which supports the fact that often homework and responsibilities may suffer as a result.
This blog reminded me of the possibilities that social networking sites bring to the educational setting. Why not use social networking for educational purposes when today’s learners are already so comfortable with the environment? Since I was introduced to Ning in IT780, Seminar in Instructional Technology, I see first-hand the benefits of using such a site. Through Ning, a closed network of learners can feel comfortable learning from a distance or in a hybrid setting. It allows each learner to create their own page and upload pertinent course materials and share learning experiences with classmates. The creator of the group has ultimate control over the content, but this network provides a safe location for blogging, chatting, discussion, and uploading appropriate pictures, video, and audio files. Learning is taking on a new image. In order to motivate the technically savvy learner of today, instructors must be prepared to offer learning opportunities on a different level.
