Comments on: Using Diigo in the Classroom

Diigo I learned of while taking Dr. Yuen’s IT 860 Emerging Technologies in Instructional Technology during the summer of 2010. While I had worked with Delicious I was much more impressed with Diigo’s features. Diigo is wonderful and so user friendly. The way it allows the user to install the toolbar, and provides controls such as the highlighter and sticky notes are awesome.

There is so much potential for Diigo both in the classroom and teacher collaboration. I find myself using it in several group projects for various courses I am taking when needing to share information/web resources with fellow partners. It helps us to collaborate and manage the information much more efficiently.

In the classroom it is very secure for a K12 environment too. If a teacher creates the account he/she can then set up secure accounts for the students. Students are able to collaborate and research various projects. They can comment on each other’s work, highlight useful information, and tag using specific keywords. Diigo will even allow them to post to their Facebook or Twitter accounts too.

Before taking IT 648 I’d never heard of Diigo. Creating the Diigo account was fairly easy. Adding the bookmarks for this assignment was also very easy once I got the hang of it. I enjoyed using it features such as the toolbar. The toolbar was easily accessible and made bookmarking sites convenient. There are many ways in which I feel this site can be used in an educational setting. Educators can use it as a way to share sites that he / she may be using in their classroom with their fellow employees. They can also use it during projects, such as WebQuest ,within their classrooms so that students know exactly which sites should be used to search for information. Diigo is a create social and educational tool and I’m excited about using it in the near future.

In IT 780, Dr. Yuen created a group in Diigo for our class. That is how I have earned my firsthand experience using Diigo. I agree with Dr. Yuen that Diigo is a powerful research tool and a tool teach students how to share knowledge. Diigo stimulates knowledge sharing community between teacher and students. I have learned so much from Dr. Yuen and my classmates’ bookmark in our group. To be honest, I have learned a lot more about technology from Diigo community as well. Even though I already received my grade for our class project, I still use Diigo and share my bookmark almost every day. I believe I addict to Diigo because I found myself finding time in my busy schedule to bookmarking and sharing information to others and learning from others. In addition to my class Diigo, I create my own group with another people to share important or interesting website about art and craft. Diigo has opened a new way for me and my friends to share and communicate our interest.

I think Diigo is easy to use because the Diigo toolbar that can be install in any browsers. I like its highlighting and annotated features. In my opinion, both tools facilitate knowledge sharing in Diigo. Also, Diigo allows user to share their bookmark through other social media tools such as Twitter and blog.

Although I have experienced using Diigo, I still learn from Dr. Yuen’s presentation. For example, I now learned that Webslides allows Diigo’s users to convert bookmarks, RSS feeds, and blogs to slideshare. I think Websildes is a wonderful idea that I need to explore more.
