Embedded Media HTML Generator

Digital video is very popular these days. Many teachers and students are creating digital videos for their teaching and learning activities. However, putting a video online and embedded in a Web page is challenging for many teachers and students. The Center for Instructional Technology at the University of California, San Francisco has created an easy-to-use Web service called “Embedded Media HTML Generator” which generates the HTML needed to embed QuickTime, Real, Windows Media, and Flash files in your Web site. You simply choose the format of the video you want to embed (Flash, QuickTime, Real Media, or Windows Media Video), you fill out the form detailing file names and locations as well as any optional settings (desired width and height, auto play, and looping) and hit submit. You will then be presented with the HTML codes. All you need to do is copy the generated HTML codes and insert directly into your web page. It is very simple and easy process.

I recently used the Embedded Media HTML Generator to put a short presentational movie on the Wiki here at BearingPoint. This was fun, fast, and didn’t require much, but just a little coding. That was easy. My only concern is their presentation of the software. It is great and if you want people to get it, then why not setup a good website to show it off. I believe in first impressions that make a lasting effect, but the website is gaudy.

Anyway, back to the software. It is quick, efficient and it takes all formats, such as, Flash, QuickTime, Real Media, and Window Media. What more could you ask for? You simply put in the needed information and boom there you go. However, there are some setbacks to that too.

A suggestion to make the site a little more helpful is to add a browse button for simply finding the movie on the local station. They upload the movie and then give you simple html code to place on the web. All the other extras like the compatibility, playback quality, loop playback, show controls, and alignment are all great. All of these should be included also. This is just my opinion. Its fine the way it is.

Overall, the quality of the Embedded Media HTML Generator is good. I would recommend it to anyone looking for good online software to embed movies. I would have to tell them about the site first and how to navigate to get to it.

One assignment I give to my Webpage Design students is that they must incorporate animation and video into their Web pages. My students always seem to struggle with this concept, but I think this website would be a great benefit to the students. I like how this website allows the student or user to get away from writing the code, and allows the student to just simply fill out a form and do a copy and a paste. From actually viewing the form, the form is very simple to fill out. All one has to do is provide information about server, file path, and width, and select some options such as play automatically, show controls, loop playback, and alignment. Step 2 takes users to the actual code, showing them what they are going to copy and paste, and before they insert the code into their sources they are allowed to test the code. It also allows users to add more than just one media file. The user of the Embedded Media HTML Generator can incorporate many formats such as Real Media, Windows Media, and QuickTime.

I am very excited about reading this blog because I cannot wait until my class moves to the tutorial on inserting media within the webpage. I do feel that students still need to practice writing the code to insert a video so the student will appreciate that struggle. After the struggle, I will show them how to use this website to embed media within a webpage, which is a breeze. This website also talks about embedding animations; I think the website needs to provide more information on the topic to the user. This website mainly focused on embedding movies into a web page. I am sure it is no different from embedding a movie, but it would be great for the students to have a visual.
