Developing Data Literacy with InspireData

InspireData is a powerful data analysis tool for students in grades 4 to 12. InspireData applies the strategies of visual learning to data literacy and inspires students to discover meaning as they collect and explore data in a dynamic inquiry process in science, mathematics, and social studies. Students formulate questions and make connections between data and its visual representations to interpret information, solve problems, and draw conclusions. As a result, students build deeper content knowledge, develop analytical skills, and strengthen critical thinking skills. I think InspireData is a wonderful tool for teachers and students. It has many powerful features to help students collect and organize data, analyze data dynamically with multiple plot types (Venn, bar, stack, pie and axis plots), and communicate findings with Slide Show. The latest version of InspireData (version 1.5) even has an e-Survey tool that allows students to create and publish an online survey to gather data and then instantly download results for further analysis.

Also, the video gives brief demonstrations from data collection to data analysis with the integrated Table and Plot Views. In addition, it walks through different plot types to identify patterns, trends and relationships.

    Inspiredata is a wonderful program. I know of a few classes in some elementary classes. I work at the YMCA in the after school program there. The students that I work with there bring projects home that they have to use some type of software. I have seen some beautifully organized projects using kidspiration and inspiredata. The kids have told me it makes it easier to organize and understand. It is very easy to navigate and work. The children not only make it easier for themselves and also enjoy what they are doing. The video that is posted with this blog also makes it seem so much easier and shows me some things I had not seen with the children yet.

  2. I think that the inspiredata program would be great for kids. The programs would help students put in what they have explored. I don’t know of anyone who has used the program, but I believed that it would do wonders for children.

    I think that this would be a great chance now for students to explore and share what they have learned using the inspire data. I have tried the inspire kids and I love it everything that you needed was there and ready for use. Not to mention, it was fun using it.

    Inspiredata sounds like a wonderful educational program for the classroom. It will inspire students to be creative in their learning experiences. The students can make Vinn diagrams and create their own survey. It seems like junior high and high school students would really use this program. I think all schools need to get this program installed on the computers. I believe that the students would find this program as an educational tool that is fun to work with. It would probably improve the student’s learning in Math, Social Studies,and Science. I know with the No Child Left Behind Laws, this tool would help the educators teach diagrams, dat analyzation, etc. and it would bring up test scores!
