VoiceThread

Voicethread is basically a Web-based digital-storytelling application that allows users to share their stories through audio, images, videos or text.  It also allows visitors to make comments on their stories in five different ways:  1) voice with a microphone, 2) or voice with telephone), 3) text, 4) audio file, or 5) video with a webcam. The stories can be shared with anyone in the world or they can be kept private for selected individuals.  Like many Web 2.0 applications, you can get a free basic account as well as a VoiceThread Pro account with unlimited creation and advanced features for a fee.  However, VoiceThread is offering free educator accounts for all k-12 classroom educators.  These free accounts are identical to the Pro account in almost every aspect.

I think VoiceThread is a great classroom tool and has a great potential in education.  It has a user-friendly interface.  Creating and sharing a video thread is a simple process and all you need is a microphone or WebCam.  Teachers and students can upload their PowerPoint slides (saved as JPEGs) and expand on the info with audio snippets.  Teachers can even set up an account for individual classes that allow students access to the account for group projects.  Also, VoiceThread presentations can be embedded in blogs and Web sites.   To learn more about VoiceThread, you can watch this VoiceThread presentation, What is VoiceThread Anyway?

There are many excellent VoiceThreads created by teachers and students that demonstrate the uses of VoiceThreads into the classroom:

I have created a VoiceThread on my blog, Tech Learning.  Unfortunately, I can not embed my VoiceThread in my blog since WordPress.com does not allow Flash embedding.  Nonetheless, please click on the VoiceThread image shown below to access my VoiceThread page.   Here is a wonderful chance if you have never used the VoiceThread.  Just sign up and click your microphone and start threading your thoughts.  Please feel free to leave me a message by recording your audio/video/text on this VoiceThread. Thank you.

As an educator, I am very excited to read about the innovative technology called VoiceThread. Students have varied learning styles; therefore, there is not a universal approach to educating students. Teachers have to be concerned about how some students may learn at a faster pace compared to their classmates or how some students are more visual learners instead of auditory learners. In order for teachers to meet their students’ learning needs, then he or she must include differentiated instructional strategies to ensure that learning will take place.
What is a better way to teach students at their desired pace, using multimedia technological strategies and meeting the learning needs of the majority of your students? None other than VoiceThread! This is a remarkable piece of technology that will allow teachers to upload instructional materials for students that are fast learners. After a teacher has covered a specific topic or unit, then the accelerated learners can use VoiceThread as an opportunity to reinforce learning objectives. This will allow teachers additional classroom time to work with the struggling learners. On the contrary, teachers can also use VoiceThread to upload remedial instructional materials for students that may need additional drill-and-practice activities. In the aforementioned scenario, the teacher does not have to repeat instructional materials that were previously covered in class. If students did not understand the concept, then he or she can use VoiceThread to practice former units. There are numerous of other practical ideas in which teachers could use VoiceThread, such as giving students extra credit assignments or to explain a detailed scientific project with explicit details.

This is a great tool. I had not heard about it before. I listened to some of the linked VoiceThreads above and signed up for my own account. I was very impressed with what you can do with this tool. I particularly liked the ones where students were asked to talk about the pictures. This would be a great tool for teachers to incorporate new forms of technology to make learning interesting and fun for their students. I have been looking for tools to recommend to a class of students to be able to use to complete a virtual book review; I think this would be a great tool for them to use.

One thing I hope they add in the near future is captioning. I realize you can add text to your VoiceThread, so that you could record the audio first and then have the text displayed, but it would be nice to be able to add a caption that appears at the same time the audio is being played. I wonder if this tool is available to be read by a screen reader. They do have the option to add a title and description for your photos, so hopefully the screen reader can read that information.

I am a little disappointed that they only offer the free Pro accounts or K-12 educators. It would be nice if they would extend that to higher education educators as well. I did send an e-mail to them to ask about higher education educators receiving the same benefit that K-12 educators receive.

Keeping a K-12 student interested and engaged in class work is very tough and can sometimes be a pain. To keep them excited and eager to come to school is to present different tools to them. If I were a teacher, a K-6th grade teacher, I would use all the tools that I could to maintain students from falling asleep or to keep them from boredom, because in the fourth grade, in my opinion, is the most boring grade ever.

Teachers can use all kind of tools to keep the student enlightened and occupied, but using a boring old cassette player or a CD player will not do the trick. The teachers have to imagine better ways to keep the student encouraged. Of course, story telling can keep them woke, but using VoiceThread would be even better.

VoiceThread, by far, seems like a truly incredible application that is great for elementary and post secondary students. It’s so amazing I would recommend it to parents. Parents can read, teach, or let there children be creative with storytelling. This is amazing software that will, in my opinion, go farther than possible. I have never heard of it till now. While I was researching and playing around with VoiceThread, there was a touch of similarity with the the software, AerialReader (I Think thats what it is called), because of the interactions between the application and the user. I love that it is interactive, what better way to keep the student happy. Imagine giving a student a story with this application, especially k-6, this would be so much fun. It will keep them woke and learning all day long, even when they are at home.

Voice Thread is an online media which can carry many types of things, like texts, images, audios and videos. People can upload their voices, videos, presentation or other materials online and the others can comment using the same types. I think the birth of Voice Thread can offer educators a brand-new way to conduct their lessons, especially for the online distance teaching and learning. Like Dr. Yuen mentioned, Voice Thread has offered free educator accounts for all k-12 classroom educators and I believe that the Voice Thread will have more potential in teaching. The teachers can easily upload their presentations for the students, with or without their voices, and the students can leave their comments or doubts about some certain topics and wait until their peers or the instructors reply. I think it is indeed very convenient for the teachers and students because they can either type, leave a reply with a microphone or just by using telephone. They also offer the classroom so that teachers and students can stay in their own community without the disturbance from outside. I think another advantage of Voice Thread is that it offers easy and comfortable interface for the users so users can easily unload their materials online even without reading the instructions. It does not require you to download any software and you can easily get access to it with your browser. Another feature that is encouraging is that the Voice Thread offers unlimited number of pieces and you can also have unlimited size in your media library.

  7. I am collecting examples of how educators are using Voicethread in their classroom or for professional development on a wiki at: http://voicethread4education.wikispaces.com/

My plan is to share these examples with other technology teachers who provide professional development in their schools.

Feel free to add your own examples or links to resources. Thanks in advance,

When I began searching on VoiceThread, I could not stop. I was so amazed by the entire process. I loved seeing what others had experienced, or what they saw. Immidiately many thoughts began to pop up in my head on what I could do with this sight. There are so many things that VoiceThread can be used for. Education would become fun for our kids and youth. They could use this for their own responses, but also leave it open to interact with others around the world. Hearing others thoughts and ideas can open up their eyes and minds. What a great experience! Teachers can put up lectures in VoiceThread. The marker that you can use is very helpful for both the teacher and the others that respond. Art classes could use this to explore certain works and their meaning. Learning would have been a lot more fun had I had something like VoiceThread to use and explore for subjects like history, literature, and even science. Even as an adult continuing my education, I know that I will begin to use this tool for learning.

What a great way to tell and preserve family stories. A VoiceThread of your mom and dad’s photographs with their voices and their stories behind them would be priceless to you and the future generations. It would also be a fun way to share photos and stories with your family and friends either by posting it on a blog or sending it to them.

I am particularly interested in Voice Thread as a means of differentiated instruction. I have one French IV student whose schedule did not allow her to attend our class. She is doing an independent study, which has been difficult for her. I see alot of possiblities with Voice Thread in providing instruction for her.

    學完這學期的課程,我最like的 free software 就是它囉!
    分享一下,我link 一個教分數的voicethread….
    and then ,I give a comment >D<
