School 2.0

The term “School 2.0” started appearing in several articles, blogs, and wikis since last year. So, what is School 2.0? According to School2-0.org, School 2.0 is about the ‘next generation of school’ that can be supported by an integrated technology infrastructure. It is a concept that helps transform schools in order to meet the multiple challenges of the 21st century — accountability, student engagement and achievement, and economic competitiveness. However, how do we create schools that can realize that vision of School 2.0? What is the link between pedagogy and technology? How do we build schools with a pedagogical framework that allows all stakeholders (students, parents, teachers, and administrators) to harness the power of information technologies to change the way we think about schools and create a transformative experience for all involved?

School2-0.org offers an interesting brainstorming tool for schools and communities to help envision the future of education. The tool is a School 2.0 Map showing various possible scenarios or visions of the future with example student, teacher, and parent conversations, classroom activities and technologies, and more. School2-0.org states, “While School 2.0 depicts a variety of educational and management scenarios that utilize technology, the examples, information and ideas included are designed to serve as prompts for discussion and should not be construed as a recommendation of any particular technology or scenario.”

  1. You might also look at the http://www.classroom20.com social network and associated wiki (www.classroom20wiki.com). The network has over 5,000 members. They definitely got more traction that the “school 2.0”-phrased sites–which I think is because “school 2.0” has a real connotation of reform, while “classroom 2.0” sounds more like “improvement” and not “overhaul.” 🙂

Either way, I think we’re in an exciting time!

School 2.0 could be likened to recent discussions about E-Learning 2.0. Both terms herald a new dynamic in the way education looks, feels, and operates. The blog above ask the question “How do we create schools that can realize that vision of School 2.0?”

The general vision is one where technologies abound and are accessible to the entire community on and off of school campuses. I believe that virtualization and cloud computing could be an answer to this desire for ushering in School 2.0 and E-Learning 2.0.

Many areas in life are predictably cyclical in nature, and education is no exception to this rule. Cloud computing actually has roots in the mid-90s Beowulf computing. The basic idea in virtualization and cloud computing is that individuals tap into one primary server to compute. A large number of “dummy” machines utilize the main server, which does the work of processing and so forth.

Virtualization also allows this server to be located in a virtual environment; that is, the server that hosts all of the “dummy” machines could actually be a virtual server off location rather than a physical server on location. Virtualization might help to ensure that students and the community are using the latest and best software products and that the software is up to date. After all, it is much easier to make changes and updates to one server than a number of computers.

If virtualization and cloud computing were implemented, then the entire community would have access to these incredible tools. This scenario does have some negative aspects because there are a number of security risks exposed in relationship to cloud computing. In addition, this system could save a huge sum of money. The cost savings would range from cheaper “dummy” computers to fewer turnovers, and the energy saved by using a virtualized server could be significant.

依照這樣的標準來看,教育行政人員、學生、家長也要達到Administrator2.0、student2.0及parent2.0的標準。

There is no one path to the school tomorrow.

In my vision of school 2.0 the next generation of classroom are on the cutting of technology from the prospective of hard ware and software. Each student has his own work station specialized for use in that particular area of study. The school is already a high achieving school. Has the support of the parents and community; in other words a successful school.

The unfortunate thing about “school 2.0” is that a pre existing school will have a lot of obstacles to overcome to achieve this status. Can these obstacles be overcome? Yes. Will it take a lot of work and money? Yes and Yes! From an infrastructure aspect it would easier to just start with a new building that can be upgraded with ease then trying to update a building that was built in the 40’s to support the needs on a modern classroom full of technology. It is indeed going to take the combines efforts of all stakeholder involved come up with strategies to bring about a school 2.0 environment.
