YouTube College

YouTube offers a new service called YouTube College where students can join their college and share videos only with students from their college. This is an interesting move by YouTube. YouTube College allows students to post videos and create groups that are only available to others in the same college. You can experience everything that is going on (from party videos to commencement clips) at your college. This is fun for the college students. However, I think YouTube College has educational potentials in teaching and learning. It is likely that more students and teachers will take advantage of the YouTube College by posting their educational videos, lectures, and projects clips for their classes. Unfortunately, YouTube does not offer an educational category that makes it difficult for users to find educational content. To join your YouTube College, all you need to get in is an email address from your college. However, if you signed up on YouTube with a different email address, you can change it when you join.

  1. Shenetta Booth says:

Sharing videos and posting comments about those videos has become the excitement of the digital society. There are plenty of video posting, file sharing sites out there, but nothing can top the classic YouTube. YouTube is one of the best online video sharing website. I don’t think anyone could ever top this site. It is a remarkable creation that, Heck, I wish I could have thought of. LOL. YouTube is great, it has a lot of flaws, but when it comes to using it for education I have a great feeling about it. I like the idea of having a site that you can contribute videos and create groups that can be shared throughout that school. However, the fun part would be seeing college student at parties and having plenty of fun.

Although, YouTube has outgrown its counterparts, it still can be used in education, as a tool to help student learn. There are many advantages to this creative development. One advantage is that is easily available. This would be very helpful for students that are far-a-way. I can see the use of YouTube College in e-learning and distance education courses. Students that need a way to catch up on class lectures would have a way to do that with the use of YouTube College. I noticed that Dr. Yuen said that YouTube does not offer like a filter for educational content where you can search for the material easier. This is a major disadvantage. I know one day there will be someone that will invent a filter and this will become not so much of a problem anymore.

  2. Andrea Howard says:

As Shenetta mentioned earlier and in my opinion, YouTube is the most popular and advertised video sharing site on the Internet. It allows anyone to upload their own personal videos to its database for entertainment or informational viewing purposes. All any person initiating a search needs to do is type in either a tag or phrase, as one would do when initiating a search engine search, and the desired type of video footages would appear in a “hit” list. The person would then select the preferred “hit” and proceed to view the video.

YouTube College is a great idea for both student and faculty usage because it enables video obsevations of anything related to the college/university in question. I love the idea of possibly being able to view footage of what is happening or has happened recently or in the past on my college’s campus. The best part about YouTube College is that the video footage of college activities or classes may be viewed anytime and anywhere in the world. I know that there are times that I wish I could have been a participant in some university activies at USM, but due to my being a commuter of 70+ miles to attend class, I am unable to attend events regularly on campus.

The downside, of course, is that the video footage is public to any person affiliated to the university/college. Course specific videos are readily available to other personnel who have not paid tuition to receive the privileged information.

  3. Farid says:

Dr. Yuen’s comment on college You Tube pointed out some interesting opportunities and challenges facing this phenomenon. TouTube videos are easy to create and post and allow students to interact with other members of the campus community quickly and with little or no cost. Joining YouTube College has never been easier. As the internet culture finds its ground among college students the, TouTube becomes an exciting and relevant phenomenon. In addition to its entertainment value (music, cartoons, funny things, and movies), it has been recognized for its educational potentials in teaching and learning. Teachers can use this tool as vehicle to deliver course content to their students. It is an excellent tool for long distance learning.

However, while providing a great service to students about college life, the content featured on YouTube is not always college credit worthy. Therefore, I believe You Tube phenomenon should be studied and evaluated. We must always be critical and careful.

what is the website for youtube college?

  5. James M. Thompson says:

I have a question regarding YouTube College. Would college students really perceive YouTube College as an educational tool? When I think of YouTube, I think of a place that I can go to for laughs and entertainment. I really do not think of YouTube as having anything to do with educational purposes. As stated in the article, YouTube does not even have a category for education. So, how does YouTube College would expect students or faculty to use this site to either post or access lectures? Therefore, it is difficult for me to believe that instructors would actually use it for posting their lecture notes or class videos. I believe that instructors would be more apt to post their educational artifacts on their institution’s websites. This “educational tool” does not appear to have any true educational purposes. It is just a means for YouTube to get more individuals to join.

YouTube College is simply another avenue for students to post their ridiculous and embarrassing excursions for their fellow college students to see. I do not think that many college students need any help in doing this. In fact, even if YouTube College was not invented; students would just post their videos at YouTube. I really do not understand the reason for just making the videos available only within that college. Anyone can watch videos from another college if they know someone at that particular college. In closing, this technology tool should not be included as related to education; but it is more relative to entertainment purposes.

  6. wanda moye says:

YouTube has grown expotentially; it was only a matter of time that YouTube College would develop. I agree with Dr. Yuen, I would like to see an academic component designed.

I am part of a doctoral program that consists of educators and science majors. I see a lot of potential in sharing and viewing videos of some of the department’s seminars, and outreach programs for the local schools. Some of the graduate students are involved in marine biology explorations and natural biology journeys. Their expeditions would well be worth while to view on video. Our college has a brownbag seminar lead by noted people in areas that the college community finds interesting. Although one of my professors led a brownbag session, I could not be take part because I work. This is a great example of how YouTube College video of the forum could have been viewed later at my home on video.

I view this move from YouTube as a way to better organize the many videos that are uploaded daily. When a request is made for a specific video it appears to be a sort of random approach; however, the dedicated servers performing these tasks need to tagged in an orderly fashion. Creating large subsections seems to be a natural way to better serve the YouTube community. In the future, maybe there will be a YouTube for College Alumni or sororities and fraternities (if they do not already

  7. Lou Ellen says:

The potential of You Tube is unbelievable. There is not a day that goes by that I do not have someone forwarding me a You Tube video through email or Myspace. There are many other video outlets out there, but none with the fame of YouTube. YouTube has so much going for it that colleges and universities would be a fool not to jump on the bandwagon. Early educators could also take advantage of this and use this as a tool to help educate their students. If students are already using this avenue for entertainment, why not let them use it for education too? I do wonder how long it will take for schools and educators to catch on to this. YouTube should devise an education category. It would make searching much easier. There are really neat video podcasts from YouTube College. They have a student sounding off on a particular topic or on a professor, and then the professor has the right to speak their mind on what the student has said about them. They are very short and usually only about one certain topic or question. I would have loved to have that when I was choosing colleges and professors for my classes. Other entities on campuses could also take advantage of YouTube College. Fraternities, Sororities, TV, Radio, and many other student and campus organizations could easily take advantage of YouTube by posting their events, shows, or a number of activities. It reaches a large audience anywhere! Such a great thing that I hope can invent itself into something more educational-friendly.

  8. Christopher Tisdale says:

As others have mentioned, YouTube is the most popular site for sharing videos over the Internet. YouTube is a very awesome website when used effectively. Last year (2007) I let my students use YouTube to find videos that were related to their black history web pages, but my students ran into a lot of inappropriate material, which led the school district to block the website. This website provided some awesome video footage on black history.

I think YouTube College is a way to share videos about what is going on your campus. I am just like Andrea; I live 84 or more miles from USM, and I miss a lot of events that are held on campus. Using YouTube College, I could stay informed about certain events that take place on my campus. This would be awesome for Greek life to show others their steps and struts. This could also benefit students that take online classes; they could retrieve lectures from online.

I really don’t believe YouTube College is going to be used to represent the college or university in positive aspect, however. I agree with James that YouTube is usually used for entertainment purposes. There is a lot of inappropriate material on the website, and to find good sources you really have to filter through the videos, which is time consuming. Some videos I expected to be good sources turned out to be jokes. I think for this to work the school needs to have filters have administrators monitor the content of what is being uploaded to the website.

  9. Tim Bryant says:

While I don’t see this as being used for education, there are “plug and play” servers from companies like Polycom that can do this for a university or school. It’s possible to archive all the classes, and many large universities already do it on YouTube.

There will be more and more video sites, and either YouTube will figure out a way to become more “scholarly”, or someone will start up a website to do just what we are discussing.

There are many times that I go looking for a certain tool, only to discover it’s not out there. Then within a couple of months, there it is, someone just came up with it, or maybe I just couldn’t find it before. The pace is so quick all it will take is one enterprising person reading this, and there will be a real “CollegeTube” out there on the net.

  10. I think that introducing video conferencing technology in the classroom is a great idea ! It not only allows students to communicate better with the lecturers, I think it will also facilitate discussions.

I’ve seen video conferencing technology being used in certain universities where a lecturer was conducted for local and foreign students located in another country and lively discussion took place between students of both countries through video conferencing technology.

Although it might still be quite expensive to acquire such a video conferencing set, I think the benefits outweighs the price in most instances.
