For the past month, I have viewed several videos regarding teaching and technology. I think they are well made. Teachers, administrators, and parents should watch them and learn.

Evolution of Technology and Teaching

Advances in technology have powered paradigmatic shifts in education (Frick, 1991). This video was made to encourage teachers to use technology in new ways to support and transform erstwhile ways of teaching and learning. Why We Need to Teach Technology in School?

This video describes the importance of technology in schools. Technology prepares students for lives in the future. It also engages students in learning.

    Dr. Yuen,

    This information is so powerful and I am very receptive to the ideas of incorporating of more technology into education. As an educator, I realize more and more that the usage of more technology in the classroom has now become an integral part of education in today’s society. The question is; how do we get more teachers and administrators to get on board. Nowadays, administrators consider the usage of an overhead projector in the classroom as incorporation of technology in the classroom. Maybe 5 years ago, but now, that’s preposterous. The federal government must accept that more funding is needed for public schools for more intensive incorporation of technology in these schools and classrooms. Teachers and administrators must become more demanding of their technological needs. As educations stands now, these students are being set up for failure because so much emphasis is being placed on standardized testing. Where is the differentiation in that? I could go on forever, but I will not. Thanks, Dr. Yuen for keeping us in the know!

    閱讀這篇文章與觀賞文章內所引薦之影音資料,我發現對台灣之學校利用科技輔助教育而言,尚存在許多可供參考改進之方向。尤其文章裡提到利用科技教學之觀念中,不但教學的老師須具備,甚至亦應深化到學生的家長。而就目前學生之學習環境觀之,台灣學生之家長因使用資訊設備與觀念甚至技能之普便不足,故即使學校教育已有日見科技化導向,但學生在家庭裡由家長使用網路或相關管道進行課後輔導之模式仍有相當大的努力空間。或許亦有部份家長早已利用相關模式教育子弟,但由於另有兩極化(完全無此概念)之族群存在,故使學生在此方面之學習習慣亦呈現極大差別;此現象將使教師在進一步高度利用資訊科技設計教學上有所困難。

    教育科技能帶給我們什麼呢?科技又能讓孩子的學習產生什麼作用呢?
    「改變」是一個很重要的關念。
    科技的進步、演變,讓我們的生活起了很大的變化,也帶給了我們很大的改變,也其是對孩子,當您用同樣的問題來問大人和小孩子時,您從孩子口中得到的答案,往往會讓您感到驚奇的。這是因為孩子對於科技環境、工具帶給他們的影響,是伴隨成長而同步進行的,這和我們為了生活、工作而努力去學習科技技能,努力去使用科技工具是不一樣的思維。

    所以在將科技應用於教育上時,所先應該要改變的是教師的思維,是教師對於科技工具的態度,是我們對於科技所帶來的變化的認知,唯有從這裡面來探討,我們教師才能妥善運用科技於教學上,也才會對學生的學習有所助益。

    最近教育部正大力推動E化專科教室的建置,期盼藉由科技環境的建置,來促進e化創新教學的發生的,我想方向是好的,是對的,但誠如一開始所言的,「改變」不應只是新工具的購買、新科技的建置而已,對教育來說,應用是最重要的,教師觀念的改變,教學方式的轉化,才是成功的關鍵。

    I believe educator who wishs to be successful use the technology that is part of our student’s daily lives. Computers and digital gadgets have been part of our students’ day their entire lives. Why must educators insist on being dreadful and dull by doing nothing in class but read powerpoint slides to their students? It’s no wonder our students do not want to come to class or read the text book. We give them no reason to.

    A dynamic multimedia presentation will capture and hold the student’s attention far more effectively than PowerPoint. Likewise Windows PhotoStory and MovieMaker are useful applications for bringing life to presentations.

    Thank you for posting the films above. They do provoke thought.

    Hi Dr. Yuen,

    This was a great post. I just recently watched a video taken from a High School in New Jersey struggling with those teachers who are ready to integrate and embrace technology and those who are unwilling to integrate technology because they take away from the educational learning experience.

    To me, and maybe it is because I was born at the very within the net generation, I do not believe you can use “teaching” or “technology” separately. In my opinion, effective teaching today embeds technology and any type of technology student’s utilize provides some type of teaching (i.e. self-teaching). I think the use of one without the other, that is teaching without the use of technology to some capacity; or technology used with no learning and/or teaching opportunities, is a disappointment and a disservice to today’s students. In the New Jersey school video I referenced earlier, there was clearly a disconnect and lack of student engagement in those classes that did not utilize technology.

    As technology continues to evolve, as we learn more about effective uses of technology in the classroom, and as the baby boomer generation starts to retire I believe there will be greater evidence and openness by teachers for the use of technology within the classroom.

    We are doing our students a disservice if technology is not integrated into their
    learning environment. However, there are those that would disagree with me. Many teachers, as you probably know are comfortable with the way that they teach and do not see the need or want to change much at all. This is not necessarily teachers that have been teaching for years and years. Just the opposite. There are many veteran teachers that are also looking for new and creative ways to meet the needs of their new learners. Quite often, it can be the newer teacher that wants to get by with as little as possible. Nonetheless, creating a technology rich environment for students to engage in not only increases interest in learning, but leads to greater rewards as we seek to assist our students in becoming 21st Century Learners. There is free information available for teachers to access online to assist them in harnessing these tools for creating appropriate learning activities for their students. Learning can occur without technology, but our job is to create the best possible learning environment for our students. Most teachers today, it would seem, do have a certain amount of technology available for their students to use for interaction. Therefore, efforts should be made to encourage teachers on their usage and integration into the classroom setting to facilitate learning.

    反觀我們,從傳統社會走到科技社會,這樣的衝擊是我們的,因為我們無法體會也無法了解這些新興的科技要如何運用與融入生活…在影片中問家長與學生問題,所獲得的答案這麼讓人覺得會心一笑,因為我們是用我們的角度看他們與他們使用這些數位產品,卻沒有試著了解他們是如何使用這些數位科技,在他們的角度看待這些科技的進步…。

    所以現在的E化創新變得如此重要,因為要創新的其實是我們這些跨過傳統與科技交界的老師們,我們必須學習如何將這些數位科技融入自己的生活,就像這些與生俱來就會使用的孩子們,並且思考這些新興的科技如何適當的在教學中呈現。

    因為資訊和社會一直在改變,這樣變遷快速的環境會讓孩子接收的訊息非常多元,教育和教學也就得改變以往單向教授的方式,而用雙向的溝通與回饋,才能減少世代的數位差距!
