Windows Live Essentials 2011

Microsoft has finally taken the Web 2.0 market seriously and released Windows Live Essentials 2011 few days ago.  The Windows Live Essentials 2011 is a free software suite which includes Messenger, Photo Galley, Movie Maker, Mail, Writer, Family Safety, Live Mesh, Messenger Companion, Bing Bar, Outlook Connector Pack, and Silverlight.  This is a great news for teachers and students who need free integrated software applications for teaching and learning.  I downloaded the Windows Live Essentials and gave a test drive couple days ago.  So far, I am quite impressed with the suite.  However, there is one caveat— Windows Live Essentials suite works on Windows Vista and Windows 7 but not on Windows XP.  Unfortunately, many schools are still running Windows XP.

One of the unique features of Windows Live Essentials is Live Mesh – a useful tool that allows you to access photos, documents, data, and other files to the cloud.   You can also synchronize folders on the 5 GB of free synced storage space with SkyDrive.   In addition, Family Safety is another useful feature of Windows Live Essentials for parents.  Parents can use the activity reports to monitor their children’s computer activity.  Parents can choose websites, games, and programs their children can access as well as even set time periods when their children can use the computer.

You can download and test drive Windows Live Essentials 2011.  Please feel free to tell me what you think about Windows Live Essentials 2011.
